AI influence on global elections and policy discourse

Future Shift Labs is elated to unveil a pivotal policy paper, titled The pervasive influence of AI on global political campaigns in 2024, which deeply analyses the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping political campaigns during the 2024 global elections.

The paper examines AI use in key election campaign areas, including voter targeting, campaign outreach, ethical concerns linked to generative AI and deepfake technologies, and the growing threat of AI-powered disinformation in modern electoral processes.

Authors and Editorial Team

The paper is authored by Alisha Butala, Dr. Christopher Nehring, and Mateusz Labuz, and edited by Aastha Naresh Kohli. Their combined expertise offers a comprehensive perspective on how AI is transforming electoral strategies while introducing new risks to democratic integrity.

The initiative is made possible through partnerships with Kairos Communications (South Africa) as principal partner and IPE 2025, where the research paper is presented.

Research Approach

The research methodology combines expert interviews, case studies from India, the USA, and Argentina, and analysis of Russia’s use of generative AI, alongside a wide review of global regulatory frameworks.

Policy Direction

The paper emphasizes the need for clear regulation and robust ethical standards to address AI risks in elections. Through this and related initiatives, Future Shift Labs remains committed to actionable guidance for ethical AI use in political campaigns, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and the protection of democratic processes.
